Today's four-character  「一生懸命 ishou kenmei」


一生懸命 ishou kenmei means all over creation, one's very best.

一生懸命 is from 一所懸命 isho kenmei.
In the middle ages, liege lords had their ancestral land.
They risked their life to protect their land.
They called the land 一所懸命の土地 isho kenmei no tochi.

And now only that disposition survives.

起承転結 ki sho ten ketsu

起承転結 ki sho ten ketsu means introduction, development, turn, conclusion.

起 ki = introduction
承 sho = development
転 ten = turn
結 ketsu = conclusion

Its original meaning is from a constitution method of Chinese poetry.
